Everyone has a story. No matter what we do for a living, how much we have in our bank account, whether we are unknown or well known, whether we are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or ally (the multitudes who support our community) we all have a story. A story that needs to be told. Stories are transformational. Reading them. Telling
them. Listening to other's stories. Stories are powerful
vehicles that release our unconscious energies to heal, to integrate,
to express and to grow. Nowhere is that more true than in the
GLBTA Community. And nowhere is there more of a need to have
these stories told.
It has been a decade since Chicken Soup for the Soul blasted
its way into our culture selling millions of copies because
it reached down and touched souls and hearts, transforming lives along
the way. We believe it is time to allow the powerful stories
within our community to do the same.
Each one of us has a story, whether it is visible to the eye
or locked deep inside us. It is time to give a voice to millions
in the GLBTA Community who have lived, and are living, lives of courage
and integrity - choosing love and self-respect, empowering their lives
and their world with their choices everyday.
The true power of these stories is their ability to transform
those who read them. The life we are born into is not necessarily
our destiny. All of us have the power to rewrite our story.
We have the power to recast the drama of our lives - redirecting the
actions we choose each day. The outcomes of our lives are primarily
determined by our responses to each event. We can choose to empower
ourselves and live our life's dreams.
Good stories, like the best mentors in our life, are door openers.
They are unique experiences containing insights tied to emotional
triggers that get our attention and stay in our memories. The
treasure trove of stories within the GLBTA Community has the power
to free us from being bound to decisions of the past. They can
open us to understanding ourselves and the opportunities available
to us. A really good story allows us to recognize the choices
that lie open before us, and envision new alternatives we might not
otherwise notice. They give us permission to pursue a new path.
Our dream is to compile the stories that exist within the GLBTA
Community. One book will never begin to convey them all.
Our first book will be a compilation of everyone in our community
- a way to open minds and hearts to the vast and rich diversity we
all share. Subsequent books will be created specifically for
each special part of our community: gays; lesbians; bisexuals;
transgenders; allies; gay youth; children of gay parents; people of
faith... Our goal is both to give a voice to our triumphs, and
provide transformational inspiration to our community. With
that goal in mind, we will also interweave nuggets of transformational
truths we have learned, providing directional "stepping stones"
for readers to absorb and ponder.
Will you join us? Will you share your story? Will
you direct us to those with incredible stories? Will you share
how someone else's choices had a powerful impact on your life?
Don't think you have to have great writing skills - just share your
story - we'll take care of the rest. It may require simple editing,
or it may take a phone call for an interview. It doesn't matter.
Short stories, long stories, poems... We're looking for it all!
Read the following list to get a feel for what kind of stories
we want to include in our books:
Stories should be 1500 words (or less). It is not necessary
to be a best-selling author in order to write a story for us.
And we don't need a story of your whole life (unless that is what
you want to share with us!). Your's might be the story of how
a teacher in school gave you the courage to live your life with dignity
and freedom. You might share a defining moment in your relationship
with your lover or partner. You might share how a stand you
took impacted your community. You might share how you moved
beyond your fears and did what it took to make a dream come true.
You might share how someone's death touched you, or impacted your
life in some way.... Are you getting the idea?
There will of course be an ongoing need for stories as we create
more books... Keep the stories pouring in. Many more books will
follow!
Additionally, photographer Robbi Sapp will be creating a collage
of pictures of our community to be included in our first book - as
well as subsequent ones. All stories/pictures must be accompanied
by a name, address, phone number (day/evening) and email address (if
available). No anonymous stories will be accepted for publication.
If your story/picture is selected for publication, we will contact
you regarding a signed release form as well as a bio/picture.
Additionally, you will be sent a copy of the book signed by the authors.
Soon you may visit us at www.RainbowFoundation.com. Although it
is under construction, this non-profit organization we have established
is dedicated to the self-empowerment of ALL PEOPLE including, but
not limited to, gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders and allies.
You may send your story to us at the following email address:
You may send us your photograph to: Pics4Robbi@Rainbows4GLBTA.com (in an attachment
as a jpeg file so that we may view it.)
